Shopify Meta Ads Tracking Broken: Fix Pixel, CAPI, and Attribution Gaps

By Adnan Ashraf · Published 8 Sept 2026 · 10 min read · 55 guides in the library

When Meta Ads spend rises but Shopify purchases look wrong, fix pixel, Conversions API, consent, and checkout events before you blame creative.

Broken Meta tracking on Shopify is a revenue blindfold. Ads managers optimize toward events that never fire, or fire twice, or fire only on desktop. Before you scale budgets, prove that Purchase, AddToCart, and InitiateCheckout match what Shopify actually records for the same window.

Start with a clean event inventory: browser Pixel vs Conversions API (CAPI), theme app embeds, and any third-party tracking apps. Duplicate pixels are common after theme switches. Use Meta’s Test Events tool with a known order and compare timestamps to Shopify’s order ID.

Checkout Extensibility and thank-you page changes often drop legacy pixel snippets. Prefer Shopify’s native customer events / web pixels and a properly configured CAPI channel over brittle Liquid hacks in checkout.liquid. If you still inject scripts in theme.liquid only, thank-you and shop.app paths may never see them.

Consent and iOS privacy reduce browser signal — that is why CAPI matters. Match quality improves when you send hashed customer data consistently and dedupe with event_id across browser and server. Missing event_id pairs create inflated purchase counts that look “good” in Ads Manager and wrong in finance.

Also check payment and upsell apps that redirect off the standard thank-you flow. If the customer lands on a third-party confirmation page, your Purchase event may never run. Map every successful payment path, including Shop Pay and wallets, then retest on mobile Safari.

When tracking is trustworthy again, CRO and creative tests become measurable. If your pixel/CAPI path is noisy or a recent redesign broke events, send the store URL for a free audit — I will rank tracking fixes before you waste another week of spend.
